The wait for GTA 6 has reached the point where even a few seconds of new footage can send the entire gaming internet into overdrive.
Now we’re getting considerably more than a few seconds.
Rockstar Games has confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a new presentation scheduled for August 27, 2026. It will premiere on Netflix at 3 PM ET, with the footage also becoming available through Rockstar’s other channels afterward.
That changes the situation completely.
We’ve already seen trailers.
We’ve seen screenshots.
We’ve seen character introductions.
We’ve seen Vice City.
We’ve seen Jason and Lucia.
But we’ve never had the kind of extended look that lets Rockstar properly demonstrate how GTA 6 actually plays.
And that’s what makes this presentation so interesting.
Rockstar hasn’t confirmed exactly what will be included, so everything beyond the announced event is expectation rather than fact.
But there are seven things I really want Rockstar to show.
1. Actual GTA 6 Gameplay
This sounds obvious.
It isn’t.
We’ve seen gameplay footage in previous GTA 6 trailers, but Rockstar has carefully controlled how much of the actual gameplay loop we’ve been allowed to see.
The Extended Look is the perfect opportunity to change that.
I want to see what happens when Jason or Lucia is simply dropped into Vice City and allowed to start doing things.
Not a perfectly edited cinematic sequence.
Not a 10-second driving shot.
Actual gameplay.
Show us the player taking a car.
Show us switching weapons.
Show us interacting with NPCs.
Show us entering buildings.
Show us getting into trouble.
Show us escaping.
That’s where GTA 6 will finally start to feel like a game rather than an incredibly expensive movie.
Rockstar’s official description of GTA 6 already promises Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, with Jason and Lucia at the center of the story.
Now we need to see how all of that connects when the player has control.
2. How Big Is Vice City Really?
We’ve spent months looking at GTA 6’s map.
Fans have even recreated portions of Leonida inside Cities: Skylines 2, using trailers, screenshots and community mapping information.
But there’s still a huge difference between looking at a map and actually moving through the world.
The Extended Look could finally give us a better idea of GTA 6’s scale.
I want Rockstar to show:
- Downtown Vice City
- The beaches
- Suburban neighborhoods
- Rural roads
- Wetlands
- Smaller settlements
- Highways
- Industrial areas
- Coastal regions
More importantly, I want to see how quickly these areas connect.
One of the reasons GTA V’s world felt so convincing wasn’t simply its size.
It was the transition between environments.
You could leave Los Santos, drive into the countryside, cross a mountain and eventually end up somewhere that felt completely different.
GTA 6 appears to be pushing that idea much further.
An extended gameplay sequence would let us understand whether Leonida actually feels like a living state rather than a collection of large map zones.
3. Jason and Lucia’s Relationship
Rockstar has already made something very clear:
Jason and Lucia are the heart of GTA 6.
The official story description says the pair have always known the odds are stacked against them, and that an easy score goes wrong, pulling them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida.
But trailers can only show so much.
The Extended Look could demonstrate how their relationship actually works during gameplay.
Do they travel together?
Can players switch between them freely?
How do missions use both characters?
Does one character have unique abilities?
Can they interact with each other outside missions?
And perhaps most importantly:
How much does the relationship change the way GTA 6’s story is told?
GTA V made switching between Michael, Franklin and Trevor one of its biggest structural features.
GTA 6 appears to be taking a different approach.
Seeing that system in action would be extremely useful.
4. GTA 6’s Police and Wanted System
This is one of the areas where Rockstar could potentially surprise everyone.
Police chases are a huge part of GTA.
But GTA 6 has the opportunity to make them considerably more sophisticated.
We’ve already seen hints that Rockstar is paying close attention to how NPCs react to criminal activity.
What we haven’t seen is a proper demonstration of the wanted system.
For example:
What happens if police don’t immediately see you?
Can witnesses report crimes?
Can police track the vehicle you’re driving?
Can you change vehicles to escape?
Do officers search buildings?
Can you hide in crowds?
Does the police response escalate based on what you’ve actually done rather than simply increasing the number of enemies?
Those systems could make GTA 6’s open world feel significantly more reactive.
And this is exactly the kind of thing that would benefit from an extended gameplay demonstration.
5. Vehicles and Driving
Let’s be honest.
Nobody wants GTA 6 gameplay footage without cars.
Driving is one of the fundamental parts of the series.
But GTA 6 appears to be putting even more emphasis on vehicles and the culture surrounding them.
The new game is set in a Florida-inspired environment where cars, boats, motorcycles and other vehicles naturally fit into the world.
So I want Rockstar to show the driving model.
Not just a supercar flying down a highway.
Show us:
- Normal traffic
- Sports cars
- Off-road vehicles
- Motorcycles
- Boats
- Police vehicles
- Rural driving
- Highway traffic
- Vehicle damage
- Vehicle customization
The difference between GTA V and GTA 6 could become particularly obvious here.
Rockstar has had more than a decade to refine its driving systems.
The Extended Look is the perfect opportunity to show what that development time has produced.
We’ve already looked at another major question surrounding Rockstar’s next game: what kind of PC hardware GTA 6 could eventually demand. Our GTA 6 PC system requirements predictions break down the expected CPU, GPU, RAM and storage requirements based on Rockstar’s previous releases and the technical ambition of Leonida.
6. How Alive Is Leonida When You’re Not Doing Missions?
This might actually be the most important thing Rockstar can demonstrate.
Because GTA 6 doesn’t need to impress us only during missions.
It needs to impress us when nothing important is happening.
That’s where open-world games either become believable or fall apart.
I want to see Jason simply walking around.
Go into a store.
Talk to someone.
Visit a beach.
Drive through traffic.
Stop at a gas station.
Watch people interact.
See police dealing with something that has nothing to do with the player.
Maybe walk into a bar.
Maybe steal a random car.
Maybe start an argument.
The point is to see whether Leonida continues functioning when the player isn’t following a mission marker.
Rockstar has repeatedly emphasized immersion with GTA 6.
The Extended Look could finally demonstrate whether that ambition extends beyond scripted sequences.
7. GTA 6 Online — Or at Least a Hint
This is the one I’m least confident Rockstar will address.
And that’s exactly why it’s interesting.
Recent reporting suggests Rockstar isn’t ready to reveal GTA 6 Online details yet.
So I wouldn’t expect Rockstar to suddenly spend half of the Extended Look explaining multiplayer.
But there could be a small hint.
Maybe the presentation ends with a brief tease.
Maybe Rockstar confirms that online details are coming later.
Maybe nothing happens at all.
Honestly, nothing would surprise me.
Rockstar has every reason to keep GTA 6 Online separate from the single-player marketing campaign.
GTA Online became an enormous business for Rockstar, and revealing too much too early could distract from the launch game’s story.
So if the Extended Look focuses entirely on Jason, Lucia and Leonida, that’s probably the smarter strategy.
What Rockstar Probably Won’t Reveal
It’s just as important to discuss what not to expect.
Don’t assume the Extended Look will answer every GTA 6 question.
Rockstar has historically been very selective with information.
There are several things I wouldn’t expect to receive full explanations for.
GTA 6 PC Version
Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.
Current reporting still points to the PC version arriving later than the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release, but there is no official PC date yet.
So don’t expect Rockstar to suddenly reveal PC specifications during the Extended Look.
GTA 6 Online
As mentioned above, recent reporting suggests Rockstar isn’t ready to discuss Online yet.
Every Map Location
We might see new locations, but Rockstar doesn’t need to show us the entire map before launch.
Keeping some surprises intact is part of Rockstar’s marketing strategy.
The Netflix Decision Is Already Causing Debate
There’s another interesting part of this announcement.
Rockstar isn’t simply uploading the Extended Look to YouTube at the same moment.
It will premiere on Netflix first, with the footage becoming available elsewhere later. Rockstar’s official announcement confirms the Netflix premiere on August 27, while reporting says YouTube access follows six hours afterward.
That has already generated debate among players.
Some fans see it as an unusual marketing experiment.
Others don’t like the idea of needing Netflix to watch the footage immediately.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has defended the decision as part of Rockstar’s broader marketing strategy.
Regardless of how you feel about the Netflix partnership, it’s another indication that Rockstar is treating GTA 6 as more than a normal game launch.
This is a global entertainment event.
GTA 6’s Marketing Is About to Get Much Bigger
There’s another reason the Extended Look matters.
Take-Two has already suggested that this presentation is only part of the larger marketing campaign leading into launch.
GamesRadar reports that Zelnick described the Extended Look as just one part of a broader sequence of promotional beats before GTA 6 launches.
That makes sense.
GTA 6 is currently scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
We’re now entering the period where Rockstar needs to move from:
“Look at this amazing game.”
to:
“Here’s exactly why you need to buy it.”
The Extended Look could be the beginning of that transition.
Why This Could Be GTA 6’s Most Important Reveal Yet
The first trailer introduced Vice City.
The second trailer expanded the cast and world.
The Extended Look has a different job.
It needs to answer:
What does GTA 6 actually feel like to play?
That’s the question fans have been asking for years.
Graphics are already impressive.
The world looks enormous.
Jason and Lucia have generated plenty of discussion.
But eventually the marketing has to show the game loop.
That’s why I’m far more interested in five minutes of uninterrupted gameplay than another beautifully edited cinematic trailer.
Give us the systems.
Give us the chaos.
Give us the weird NPC behavior.
Give us the police chase that wasn’t supposed to happen.
Give us the player messing up a mission.
That’s GTA.
What I Want From the Extended Look
If Rockstar gives us everything on my wishlist, this would be the ideal presentation:
First: a few minutes introducing Jason and Lucia.
Then: uninterrupted gameplay in Vice City.
Then: a mission showing how the two protagonists work together.
Then: free-roaming gameplay outside missions.
Then: a police chase.
Then: vehicles and exploration.
Finally: a glimpse at the wider Leonida map.
That would tell us more about GTA 6 than another trailer ever could.
Final Verdict
The GTA 6 Extended Look is shaping up to be one of the biggest gaming presentations of 2026.
Rockstar has officially confirmed that it will premiere on Netflix on August 27 at 3 PM ET, with the footage also becoming available through Rockstar’s channels afterward.
We don’t know exactly what Rockstar will show.
And that’s important.
Everything in this article about specific gameplay features is an expectation, not a confirmed reveal.
But the timing suggests Rockstar is ready to move GTA 6 marketing into a much more detailed phase.
If the Extended Look delivers what fans have been waiting for, the most valuable information won’t necessarily be another look at Jason or Lucia.
It will be seeing how Leonida behaves when the player is actually in control.
That’s the difference between watching GTA 6 and finally understanding GTA 6.
And after all these years, that’s what I want to see.
