Resident Evil Requiem Review – Is It Actually Better Than Village?

Share

I went into Resident Evil Requiem expecting another Village-style action ride.

What I got instead?

A game that made me hesitate before opening doors again.

And that alone says a lot.

My First Experience – This Game Doesn’t Hold Your Hand

Let me explain exactly how this game starts feeling different.

Within the first hour, I already realized something was off — in a good way.

No overpowered weapons.
No feeling like a hero.
No safety.

Just you… limited ammo… and a constant sense that you’re not ready for what’s coming.

The hospital section? That’s where it hit me.

I wasn’t playing aggressively. I was moving slow, checking corners, listening to every sound. At one point I literally stopped playing for a few seconds because I didn’t want to push forward.

That hasn’t happened to me since RE7.

Now compare that to Village — by mid-game, you’re basically mowing down enemies. Fun? Yes. Scary? Not really.

Requiem flips that completely.

Gameplay – Two Personalities, One Game

Playing as Grace – You’re Not in Control

Grace’s gameplay is where the game shines the most.

You’re not fighting to win — you’re surviving to avoid losing.

You’ll:

  • Hide more than shoot
  • Use distractions instead of brute force
  • Think before every move

There were moments I stayed crouched behind objects longer than needed, just because I didn’t trust the game.

And that’s exactly what makes it work.

This is pure survival horror, not action disguised as horror.

Playing as Leon – Now It’s a Different Game

Then Leon shows up… and everything changes.

Suddenly:

  • You’re faster
  • You’re stronger
  • You actually fight back

And yeah, this part feels closer to Village or even RE4.

You get those cinematic sequences, big encounters, and that satisfying combat loop.

But here’s the real talk: The shift feels weird at times

One minute you’re scared to move…
Next minute you’re blasting enemies confidently

Some players will love this variety.

Others will say it breaks immersion.

Both opinions are valid.

Is It Actually Scarier Than Village?

Short answer?

Yes. Easily.

Village had its moments (that doll house section still stands out), but most of the game leaned into action.

Requiem leans into discomfort.

Not just jump scares — but:

  • Tight environments
  • Unpredictable enemies
  • Sound design that keeps you tense

Enemies don’t go down easily either. That alone changes how you approach everything.

You’re not asking “Can I win this fight?”

You’re asking “Should I even be here?”

That’s real horror.

If you’ve recently played mobile spin-offs, you’ll notice how different the approach is. Games lean heavily into strategy, base-building, and gacha systems instead of real survival horror tension. Story – Good, But Not Clean

Let’s not pretend this game nails everything.

The story tries to connect:

  • Old Resident Evil lore
  • New characters
  • Emotional arcs

And yeah, it works… sometimes.

Grace is easily the strongest part of the story. You actually feel her fear and growth.

Leon? Feels a bit like nostalgia bait.

The biggest issue?

  • The story feels overloaded
  • Some parts exist just for fan service
  • The ending doesn’t hit as hard as it should

It’s not bad — just not as strong as the gameplay.

Graphics & Atmosphere – This Is Where It Dominates

This game looks… uncomfortable.

And that’s exactly what you want.

Everything feels:

  • Dirtier
  • Darker
  • More grounded

Lighting isn’t just visual — it affects how safe you feel.

There were areas where I genuinely didn’t want to move forward because of how the environment was built.

That’s not graphics alone — that’s atmosphere design done right.

Length & Replay Value – Classic Resident Evil Strength

You’re looking at around 10–12 hours for a normal playthrough.

But that’s not the real value.

The real value is replaying:

  • Trying better routes
  • Managing resources smarter
  • Finishing faster

If you’re a real RE player, you already know — the first run is just practice.

So… Is It Better Than Village?

Here’s the honest answer — no fanboy nonsense.

Yes, if you care about horror

No, if you just want action

Requiem is the better Resident Evil game.

Village is the better casual fun game.

That’s the real difference.

Final Verdict – Straight Talk

Capcom didn’t just make another sequel here.

They corrected direction.

  • Horror is back
  • Gameplay feels meaningful again
  • You’re not overpowered
  • Decisions actually matter

But yeah, it’s not perfect:

  • Story could’ve been tighter
  • Gameplay shift won’t work for everyone

Still…

If you’ve been waiting for Resident Evil to feel like Resident Evil again, this is it.
