Microsoft Is Giving Xbox Series X|S a Major Quality-of-Life Upgrade With 1440p Remote Play and More

Share

Microsoft is testing a substantial collection of new features for Xbox Series X|S, and this latest update goes beyond a simple dashboard refresh.

The new Xbox Insider update introduces higher-quality Remote Play streaming at up to 1440p, increased video bitrates, background game downloads while using Xbox Cloud Gaming, improved voice communication, new local search functionality, and even the ability to choose startup animations inspired by different generations of Xbox consoles.

The changes are currently being tested with Xbox Insiders rather than being presented as a universal update for every Xbox owner. Still, several of the additions address long-standing quality-of-life issues that Xbox players have had to deal with.

Xbox Remote Play Is Getting a 1440p Upgrade

The biggest technical improvement in the update is arguably the upgrade to Xbox Remote Play.

Xbox Series X|S Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha rings can test Remote Play streaming at resolutions of up to 1440p, alongside increased video bitrates.

Microsoft says the changes are intended to provide sharper visuals and smoother gameplay on supported devices. Remote Play allows players to stream games from their Xbox console to PCs, phones, TVs and other compatible devices.

That means the improvement isn’t about making Xbox Series X|S games themselves render at a higher resolution. Instead, it improves the quality of the stream between the console and the device.

This distinction matters.

If you’re playing a game directly on a 4K television, this particular feature doesn’t suddenly make the game run at 1440p or 4K.

But if you’re using Remote Play on another screen, the higher streaming resolution and bitrate could make the experience considerably cleaner.

Higher Bitrate Should Make Remote Play Look Better

Resolution isn’t the only change.

Microsoft is also increasing the video bitrate available to Remote Play.

A higher bitrate gives the streaming system more data to work with, which can help preserve image detail and reduce some of the compression artifacts associated with game streaming.

Fast-moving scenes can particularly benefit from this.

Games with dense foliage, particle effects, dark environments or rapid camera movement can expose streaming compression more easily than slower games.

The combination of up to 1440p resolution and increased bitrate should therefore make Remote Play a more attractive option for Xbox Series X|S owners.

Microsoft also says Remote Play doesn’t require an additional subscription because the feature uses the Xbox console players already own.

You Need the Right Display Settings

There is one detail Xbox Series X|S owners should pay attention to.

Microsoft recommends setting the console’s display resolution to 1440p or 4K UHD under:

Settings → General → TV & display options

This is necessary to take advantage of the improved Remote Play experience.

Microsoft also notes that when streaming quality is set to Auto, Remote Play will select the highest resolution and bitrate that the connected device and network can support.

So don’t expect the feature to force 1440p onto a device or network that can’t handle it.

Your network connection and receiving device still matter.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Can Download Games in the Background

Another useful improvement targets a completely different annoyance.

Xbox Insiders can now continue downloading or updating games while streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming, provided network conditions allow it.

Microsoft says the feature builds on an earlier Insider capability that allowed players to stream a game while another game was installing or updating.

With the latest change, those downloads can continue in the background while cloud gaming, reducing the amount of time players have to sit around waiting for an installation to finish.

The system can automatically throttle downloads when necessary to protect the streaming experience.

That is a sensible approach.

There’s little value in downloading a game faster if doing so causes the game you’re currently streaming to become unstable.

Xbox Series X|S Owners Should See the Biggest Download Benefit

Microsoft specifically says Xbox Series X|S players will see the biggest gains from the background download improvement.

That’s another indication that Microsoft is trying to reduce friction between local Xbox gaming and cloud gaming.

The traditional problem is simple:

You want to play a game, but it needs a large update.

With the new system, you can potentially start playing another title through the cloud while the required download continues in the background.

It’s not a revolutionary feature, but it’s exactly the kind of small improvement that can make an operating system feel more polished.

Voice Clarity Is Coming to Xbox Series X|S

Microsoft is also testing Voice Clarity on Xbox Series X|S.

The feature is designed to reduce everyday background noise so players can hear friends and teammates more clearly during voice communication.

Voice Clarity will be enabled by default in party chat and in most games released since 2020.

Players can manage the setting through:

Settings → General → Volume & audio output → Additional options

This could be particularly useful for players gaming from shared spaces where keyboards, fans, televisions, conversations and other background sounds can easily bleed into a microphone.

It isn’t a replacement for a good microphone, but software-based noise reduction can still make voice communication noticeably cleaner.

Xbox Is Bringing Back Old Startup Animations

The most fun addition is probably the least technically important.

Xbox Insiders can now select startup animations inspired by different generations of Xbox hardware.

The available options include:

  • Xbox One
  • Xbox One X
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • The newer “We Are Xbox” animation

Microsoft’s current test does not include the original Xbox or Xbox 360 startup animations.

That limitation will probably disappoint some longtime Xbox fans.

The original Xbox and Xbox 360 boot sequences are among the most recognizable startup animations in gaming, so their absence is noticeable.

Still, the ability to switch between different Xbox-era startup experiences is a neat customization option.

A New Local Search Feature Is Also Being Tested

Microsoft is also adding a new local search feature to Xbox.

The goal is to help players find games and achievements more quickly when dealing with large libraries.

The search functionality is available in areas including:

  • My games & apps
  • Official club achievement lists
  • Profile achievement history

It works alongside existing filters and sorting options.

This may sound minor, but large digital libraries make navigation increasingly difficult.

Xbox owners who have accumulated years of Game Pass titles, purchased games and backward-compatible releases can end up with enormous libraries.

A better local search tool therefore has practical value.

These Features Are Still Being Tested

This is the most important caveat.

These features are currently part of the Xbox Insider testing program.

That means Microsoft is still gathering feedback and evaluating how they work before wider availability.

The final version could change before being released to the broader Xbox user base.

Microsoft has not indicated that every feature will necessarily arrive exactly as it appears during testing.

So if you own an Xbox Series X or Series S and don’t see the new options yet, that’s expected.

What This Means for Xbox Series X|S Owners

Taken individually, none of these features completely changes the Xbox Series X|S experience.

The 1440p Remote Play upgrade is probably the most significant technical improvement.

The background download functionality solves a practical problem.

Voice Clarity improves communication.

Local search makes large libraries easier to navigate.

And the startup animations are simply a nice bit of nostalgia.

But together, they show where Microsoft is putting attention: reducing friction around the Xbox ecosystem.

Rather than focusing exclusively on new games or major dashboard redesigns, Microsoft is improving the small interactions that players perform every day.

Is 1440p Remote Play Available to Everyone?

Not yet.

The improved Remote Play feature is currently being tested by Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha rings on Xbox Series X|S.

Microsoft has not provided a universal release date for all Xbox users in the announcement.

Therefore, regular Xbox owners will need to wait until the feature moves beyond Insider testing.

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming Already Support 1440p?

Xbox Cloud Gaming received a separate 1440p streaming upgrade earlier in 2026 for supported users and devices.

Microsoft’s February Xbox update introduced up to 1440p, higher-bitrate Xbox Cloud Gaming on supported Xbox consoles, including Xbox Series X|S, for Game Pass Ultimate members in supported regions.

The September Insider update is different.

This time, Microsoft is improving Remote Play from your own Xbox console, rather than simply increasing the quality of Microsoft’s cloud-streamed games.

That distinction is worth highlighting because the two technologies are easy to confuse.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft’s latest Xbox Insider update is not a flashy hardware announcement, but it contains several changes that could make Xbox Series X|S considerably more convenient to use.

The headline feature is undoubtedly 1440p Remote Play with increased video bitrate, which should provide a sharper and smoother experience for players streaming their console to supported devices.

The ability to download or update games while using Xbox Cloud Gaming is another genuinely useful addition, while Voice Clarity could make party chat easier to understand in noisy environments.

The customizable startup animations and improved local search are smaller additions, but they further improve the overall Xbox experience.

The key thing to remember is that these features are still being tested through Xbox Insider. Microsoft has not yet confirmed when all of them will become available to every Xbox Series X|S owner.

Still, the direction is clear: Microsoft is spending more attention on the Xbox experience outside of the games themselves.

And for players who regularly use Remote Play, cloud gaming or large digital libraries, these seemingly small changes could end up being some of the more useful Xbox improvements of the year.
